Is Your House Toddler Safe?
August 8th 2008 05:17
It is sometimes scary to think and imagine that our own kids could get hurt and injured inside the confines of our own house. We currently live in a 2-storey house and we’ve always had inner fears that our kids could get hurt going up and down the steps or even just in the lounge or kitchen.
We, as parents, try to as much as possible to make sure that our eyes are on our kids 24/7 and make sure that we are there to catch them when they fall. But children are normally hyperactive and wants be move everywhere and curious to whatever you try to put out of their reach.
In reality that only thing that we can do is make sure that our home is kids safe especially during the time that our eyes are not trained on them.
DOORS
Always keep doors closed. This goes especially for doors leading to the toilet or bathroom, the front door. Less temptation, less harm.
DRAWERS
We can’t always customize our house to keep all drawers up to the height that kids couldn’t reach. Rather than wasting the space and not putting anything on it for fear that our kids will pull it out of hiding, fill it with stuffs that are safe for them even if they can access it like tea towels, plastic cups and bowls. In baby stores, you can also buy those drawer locks especially designed to keep those little hands from opening them.
STAIRS
It would be wise to buy those safety gates or rails that can be placed at the foot of the stairs to ward off children from climbing up unattended.
TABLE
Some tables have sharp corners. We can cover this with cardboards or a piece of cloth folded several times. Alternatively, you can also buy table corner covers that you can stick to table edges.
FLOORS
Floors should be kept clean and free of any clutter. Not only is there danger when kids accidentally step on stuffs littering on the floor but with dirty floors our kids are also susceptible to picking up dirt and putting it into their mouth. Also watch out for wet patches on the floor as this may be a cause for them to slip.
DINING TABLE
Depending on your kid’s height, they could easily access what is on top of the table especially if it is already all set up for meal time. Make sure to keep them out the table or put all plates, glasses and cutlery out of their reach. Also be careful if you are the type who use tablecloth. Kids would have the tendency to tug on the cloth and could possibly pull it causing everything on top to topple on the floor and might hurt your child.
These are just a few suggestions. Definitely, there are more and those techniques or strategies would come naturally to a parent who thinks of their children’s safety.
