To Upload or Not To Upload
July 10th 2008 00:09
It’s the computer age and with friends and relatives living far from one another the easy way to share our family’s photos is by uploading them to photo sharing websites like Flickr and Kodak, social networking sites like Facebook, Multiply and MySpace, our own websites or our personal blog sites. So literally, we are exposing those photos into this large universe that is the web not actually knowing who (aside from the people we intend to share them with) could see, copy, download or grab these photos.
It is but normal for parents like me to upload our kids’ pictures into the web to show our families and friends. I am guilty of this being a mother and living in a different country as the rest of my family is. Whenever I’ve got pictures of my kids that I want to show off I upload them to Friendster. Years ago, I have been reserved in doing such for fear that somebody else will grab these pictures, edit them in an indecent manner and distribute the edited one to God knows who.
Being an IT professional myself, I know for a fact that with the web and computers around us, anything is possible simply because not everybody use this kind of resources in a good and productive manner.
The question now is this: Is it really safe to post pictures of our kids on the internet? Perhaps the definite answer now is “I’m not sure”. Nobody is stopping us parents from doing so, but always keep at the back of your mind that we must not trust the web fully. Nobody else could protect the interest and innocence of our children but us. The decision of whether to upload or not to upload mainly lies in our capable hands.
This concern was raised because of a hot controversy regarding an artist who photographs children naked. Read the story here.
