Baby’s Old Stuffs: What to do with them

July 26th 2008 07:35
Baby stuffs don’t last forever. Their clothes, for example, are worn for no more that the specified recommended wearing sizes unless baby is much smaller than the average size. Plus, they have their car seats which will have to be changed to a booster seat after a certain eight. Their baby bassinet needs to retire even before they reach a year old and sleep on a crib.

For the first year of a baby’s life, mommy and daddy need to buy specific stuffs for them that they could only use for a certain period of time but is a must to buy. Lucky, if there are relatives or friends from whom we could get pre-loved stuffs that are still in good condition. Also, there’s EBay with heaps of stores that sell all sorts of stuffs even for babies.

Commonly, parents do a garage sale or auction the stuffs over EBay. Not a bad idea, as you could turn your baby’s old and unused things into cash. Here are some more ideas on what to do with them.

BASSINET

This is baby’s first sleeping bed. Some people don’t really use a bassinet but instead buy a crib which the baby could use from when they are born until they turn 2 or 3. So, what do we do with this now useless bassinet? You can turn it into a toys basket or a hamper.

Commonly, a bassinet has two separable components – the basket where the baby sleeps and the basket component under where the castor wheels are connected. Pull these two components apart and use the under storage as a basket for the kid’s toys. Not only would the toys be easy to see through the mesh basket, but also you could save up on money from buying something to hold their toys. Or, you could also prefer to use it as a dirty clothes hamper.

BABY BATH TUB

Not until baby could keep his head upright and seat confidently by himself, a bath tub is needed to give him a bath. Most baths are really like little bath tubs – completely confined and enclosed. This kind of form makes it a perfect shape to hold something. And this something can range from clothes, to toys, to anything, as long as it doesn’t need to be covered. One particular thing to use it for is as a laundry basket. Use the tub to carry all your just-washed-clothes from the washing machine to the laundry line. The size is big enough to hold heaps of clothes.

You can also use the tub for relaxation purposes. How? Have you ever heard of a foot spa? Yeah most foot spa equipments need to plug to produce the bubbles. But that would cost heaps of money and with the downgrade of economy all round the world, cost is always a factor. But that doesn’t mean that you have to stop with your fetishes with foot spa. Simply fill the tub with warm water and add your favourite foot spa liquid soap. It doesn’t have to be bubbly, just soak your feet enough to soften those calluses and scrub it afterwards.

CLOTH NAPPIES

Disposable nappies are the in thing now. Not only is it easier to manage especially for busy parents and busy everyday life, but it needs less of the washing part that cloth nappies require. But then again, not everybody believes that disposables are a requirement but more of a luxury (especially since it is more costly). So if you’ve used them and baby is now potty training is not using the cloth nappies anymore, why not use them first as floor rags instead of throwing them straight to the bin?

FEEDING BOTTLES

Baby uses more than one feeding bottle in his entire feeding-bottle days. These bottles being durable, you can use them for ages. But, hold it, using a feeding bottle for years and years is not recommended for your kids. So what do you do with these feeding bottles? You can choose one with a big bulky look which you can put little keepsakes on. This could serve as your baby’s keepsake bottle.
With the measurements printed on the sides of the bottle you can use it as measuring cup (if don’t have one) and you can be sure that the calibrations are 95-99 percent accurate.

TOYS

Baby toys range from mobiles and pull-alongs to rattles and balls, toy cars for boys and dolls for girls plus stuffed animals, bears and famous characters. Some toys you can keep for life (especially if it means a lot to your kids) some they just outgrow so easily (like the rattles and mobiles). As they grow old, try to hand pick some toys which your kids could learn from and keep those. Toys with numbers, letters and colors can be kept and be used for the early learning of your kids. Toy cars for boys are ageless, especially the miniatures. Even after they are so over playing with them, a proper arrangement could make them a beautiful display in their rooms. This goes the same for dolls, as long as they are kept clean and good as new.

CLOTHES

Aside from selling, a good next stage for clothes is to keep them and use them with the next baby or give them to nephews or nieces. There are also non-profit organizations that need old clothes – why not make a good deed and donate it for a good cause.

Bottom-line

We look at some stuff that we don’t use any more as merely useless clutter simply because they cannot serve us the purpose of what it is really meant to do. But if we think about it well and good, that is actually not true! There are more to alternative use for your baby’s old stuffs than the few ones that I mentioned here. All you have to do is think hard and think “RECYCLE”.
