Planes and Babies

Travelling with kids is challenging. Fun because you get to spend some time off work and actually just be with your kids. Tiring because you just don’t get to relax 24 hours because you’ve got little ones to look after.
I remember our first plane ride as a family. We’ve got a 1 and a half years old and a four months old with us. And you’d think they’d be that small it would be easy to keep them in place! Wrong! It was a dreaded plane ride. My husband knew it would be tough, but we had to do it anyway. Our flight to New Zealand is only 3 hours but it was a nightmare.
The five of us had to fly so we chose the cheapest flight that we can find. Therefore, it wasn’t on a jumbo 747 with descent leg room. And with the kids being too young to have their own seats, they have to sit on our lap the entire flight. My youngest generally just slept through the flight so that was fine. But my eldest just made a big deal about not being able to run around, be strapped on his Daddy’s lap and couldn’t even stretch out in front of him. Worst part is, the way he cries is just irritating. Though we expect other passengers to understand that “hey, he’s just a baby”, but everybody’s different.
Then an angel stood before us and told us that they’re arranging some vacant seats so that our 13 year old could occupy another seat so we can have a spare seat in between us for our Big Baby. Good thing the flight was not filled so the flight attendant considerably gave us a seat to spare.
As if the flight itself is a nightmare, customs and immigration have been tougher than tough as we wait in line, carrying two heavy little beings (no stroller yet because it had been checked in), plus our hand carry bags while trying to wake our sleepy legs from the flight.
And, oh, mind you we did that twice in one year! As if we did not learn our lesson from the first one. The second time was a longer 8 hours travel plus a stop over as we go home for a Christmas holiday in the Philippines. But we had to do it anyway. Now, 6 months after we came back from a challenging plane trip to the Philippines, we swore to plan our next trip when the kids are big enough to have their own plane seat and could stand and walk on their own without the need for being carried around. We care less if that would cost us more, at least we would all be comfortable!
