Household Management for Busy Parents: Tip # 1
July 17th 2008 09:25
Parenting has changed faces over the years. In traditional times, Father goes to work while Mother stays at home and look after the household. Now, there is role reversal where Mom goes to work while Dad stays at home and most often, parents try to make it a double-income family whether it be part time or full time.
With such a busy day to day scenario, busy parents should have a “Household Management” technique to handle the demands of every day parenting life and still have a time to enjoy life beyond work and running a household.
Plan a Weekly Menu
Who says that planning what to eat every major meal is easy? Let alone cooking.
You just got home from work and it’s nearly six o’clock in the evening. Apart from being tired, you have to prepare dinner soon before your husband (or wife, whoever gets home first) arrives. Surely, the kids are as starving as you are. There you are standing in front of your fridge or cupboard and couldn’t figure what the heck you are going to serve for dinner.
Sounds familiar? I’m sure every parent had been in this situation. And what is the usual result? The whole family will either eat something out of the can (not too healthy, not even guaranteed to be a balance diet if done everyday), jump in the car as soon as Dad (or Mom) arrives and eat out or get something to go, or feed on left overs (not bad, that is, if you have any leftovers).
To make life simple, why not plan a week’s worth of menu before the week even comes? Me and my husband decided to do just that two months ago and it was really worth it. We often go grocery shopping on a Friday so I try (as much as I can) to make a menu for the following week on a Thursday night. It is quite challenging as I need to make sure that we won’t be eating the same stuff we had the week before, that we don’t have the same type of meat for 2 consecutive nights and that the food is easy to prepare.
With planning our menu:
• We minimized eating take-aways and spending unnecessarily on food.
• We were able to buy things we need from the grocery and not pick up just what we see.
• Meal time becomes more exciting knowing that what you would be eating is not leftovers.
