Big Brother

Usual Saturday lunch would really turn into a heart warming event with kids around. My 1 year old and 2 years old sons are both sitting side by side on one end of the lunch table. While busy chatting away with my husband and putting food in both my kids mouth, I had been oblivious of what the two little ones are doing.
It’s just when I gave my eldest a piece of fish meat that I took notice of what he is doing. After making a small bite out of the piece, he reached out to his brother and makes him bite on the same piece as well. He did that twice for himself and twice for his brother. I looked over to my 1 year old’s face and see a smile on his face.
With the two of them born so close to each other, I dearly hoped that they would grow up as best of friends aside from being brothers. From the very instant that my youngest was born, we made big brother feel that he is still as special as he is before the little baby came. We thought jealousy would grow on him as he is used to being the baby of the house. But we were wrong and all our efforts have paid off. Even at their tender age, it is evident that they adore each other. Big brother doesn’t want little brother being left out of all the hustle and bustle. He calls out to me whenever he hears his younger brother crying and I’m not giving instant attention. The little one on the other hand laughs at the slightest hint of comic act his brother does. Usually he would reach out to him as if saying, ‘Come on, let’s play’.
Simple actions but begets happiness of the heart. As a mother, there’s nothing else that’s more gratifying for me but seeing that the kids who all came from the same womb are living in perfect harmony no matter how different they are. Yes, they may be too young and some people would say that it’s not until they are big enough to fight that they would hate each other. But, hey, what mother would want that to happen? That is the reason why from the very start we should try to build their affection for each other.
